The labels name refer to a river very known by us at Tropical Diaspora® Records. The same Rio Doce that give the Title of Ska Maria Pastora master piece Album "As Margens Do Rio Doce" being released by Tropical Diaspora® Records this year in a final cut remastered version on heavyweight purple Vinyl.
Following the narrative in Ska Maria Pastora Album release edited by Dj Dr.Sócrates, the Arrecifes Compilation bring a selection of songs that show us how the destinies of the peoples of the Global South intersect in different rhythms, which become anthems of true internationalism and strong vacal messages building another Tropical Diaspora® Records socially responsible dance-floor.
So Tropical Diaspora® Records is committed to create a musical narrative about the people who crossed the Atlantic from Africa to the Americas, the encounter with the oringinary people and gave rise to cultural expressions that reflect both the horror and hope of that experience. As we carry out our musical research, we come face to face with the question of how to address the cultural life of communities that have been dispossessed for many centuries. Ways of looking and narratives need to be handed back, as we observe with sadness how mainstream recording companies are still in the business of taking advantage of, expropriating the cultural heritage of Africa and the Americas.
Tropical Diaspora® Records language is music. We feel obliged to empower the people we work with by means of giving them the chance to control their own narrative. We emphasize cross-cultural experiences that show the manner how communities take their past and present into their own hands. And we are glad to be an instrument for this purpose.
Arrecifes is a collection of unreleased songs on vinyl that were released in the first works of prominent artists from the 90s in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. As usual in the culture scene in this region they were poorly distributed, or the circulation was not successful. With the arrival of Arrecifes, the public can finally have access to this "hidden" material. The sound of Pernambuco reverberates beyond the barrier of the main stream.
Artists such as Isaar, Erasto Vasconcelos (in memory), Rogerman, Kaya Na Real, Mestre Ambrósio, Salvador Santo, Mundo Livre S/A, Academia da Berlinda, Café Preto, and Ori, are together on the same album for the first time. A meeting of generations of contemporary music from Pernambuco, located in the rich Northeast region of Brazil. And despite all the marketing difficulties faced by those who create art there, the region continues to generate like in the past with the Mange Beat increasingly prolific music workers and musical movements every year.
Arrecifes - SONIDO PERNAMBUCANO - is compiled by Pedrosa DJ, and released in a partnership between Tropical Diaspora® Records and Rio Doce Piedade Mix.
The cover illustration is by Jorge Du Peixe, and the final art by Danilo Fontelles. Mastering was handled by Carlos Trilha.
